Let’s face it, over time our balance and strength decreases and things that used to be simple tasks can become hard to do and even dangerous. For instance, climbing in and out of a wet tub or shower can become dangerous. Walking down a dark hallway, especially if there are throw rugs, can easily cause a trip. Walking up and down stairs can really be a challenge.  Here are a few things you can change in your home that cost very little money and may help you to avoid becoming one of the 2.2 million seniors that will make a hospital visit this year from a fall.

1. Install grab bars inside and outside your shower
2. Install better lighting in hallways
3. Pick up throw rugs, specially at the top of the stairs, in hallways and in the bathroom
4. Pick up the clutter that we all get used to around the floor like magazines and books
5. Make sure that you have good railings on steps and porches
6. Install new lever style handles on door knobs
7. Subscribe to a personal alert system like Lifeline or Life Alert

There are many other things that can be done for very little money but this list is a good place to start. Change is hard and many people assume that these minor alterations do not apply to them. Truth is, each year one in every three adults age 65 and older falls. Among those age 65 and older, falling is the leading cause of accidental death. Falls are also the most common cause of non-fatal injuries for hospital admissions.

All this to say, that throw rug or carpet runner isn’t worth the risk of a fall! Please think seriously about making some small changes and installing grab bars and better lighting so that you can be in the 2 out of 3 that won’t fall this year! Be safe.
